  • Chlamydia

    Overview

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is named after a class of microorganisms that target the genital area and the lymph nodes which surround them. Chlamydia is easily the most common form of sexually transmitted disease, with as many as eight million new cases diagnosed in the United States each year. Overall, chlamydia affects women more often than men. The health risks posed by chlamydia are also typically more severe for women, and for babies born to mothers affected with the disease.

Chlamydia is usually transmitted through sexual contact with a partner infected with the STD, however, it is also transmitted without sex, for example from an infected mother to her newborn child.

Note: Chlamydia in both women and men should be treated immediately. Due to the many parameters and potential problems related to any type of sexually transmitted disease, a trained health professional should be consulted if an infection is suspected. In the case of any STD, you should determine if antibiotics or additional pharmaceutical drugs are necessary or if natural remedies on their own will be sufficient.

    Symptoms of Chlamydia

The primary symptoms of chlamydia are lesions which occur within the genitals with accompanying irritation in the lymph nodes which surround the genital region, including the inner thigh region. However, oftentimes, chlamydia does not have any noticeable symptoms. This poses a specific health threat to newborn infants of mothers with chlamydia. Left untreated, chlamydia can result in infertility and tubal pregnancies, in addition to premature birth and infant death. Newborns and infants may also develop pneumonia, and ear infections due to chlamydia.

Although chlamydia can infect the cervix, urethra, ovaries, and throat, it typically attacks the upper vaginal tract. This area includes the fallopian pipes, endometrium (lining of the womb), and pelvic peritoneum (coating of the pelvis). It is not surprising that the most common signs of chlamydia are pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Each year, chlamydia causes approximately 50% of PID incidents. Symptoms of both chlamydia and PID consist of vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, changes in urination, and fever. These symptoms ranges from mild to very severe.

Caution: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can be serious and life-threatening. Therefore, correct diagnosis and prompt medical care is very important.

In men, chlamydia primarily impacts the urethra and the epididymis, which is the main excretory duct of the testicles. Chlamydia is actually the number one reason for urethritis, the most common STD impacting men. As with women, chlamydia often displays no symptoms and is consequently difficult to treat. When signs and symptoms are present, they include discharge from the penis, urethral itching, and/or changes in urination. Chlamydia that impacts the epididymis is usually characterized by pain in a single side of the scrotum, in addition to swelling. This can range from mild to extremely serious.

    Prevention Guidelines

As with all sexually transmitted diseases, the most effective response to chlamydia is avoidance. To avoid chlamydia, do these:

Be careful choosing a sex partner and find out about his or her health and sexual history prior to engaging in a sexual relationship. Have sex only if the person doesn’t have apparent symptoms of infection and is prepared to assure your protection throughout sexual intimacy. Be prepared to talk and ask about previous experiences. Be direct and persistent. Make conversations regarding health a natural part of the sexual relationship.

Limit the number of people you have sex with. The chance of contracting an STD increases exponentially in direct relation to how many sexual companions you have.

Avoid sex altogether if your partner exhibits open lesions or swelling on his or her body.

Always practice safe sexual intercourse. Men must always use a latex condom, especially when engaging in sexual intercourse with someone new. As an alternative, ladies can think about the use of a latex female condom. When engaging in oral sex, use a latex dental dam. Long-term, monogamous sexual partners should also use some form of protective contraceptive unless planning a pregnancy.

Avoid swallowing semen, as it acts as an immune depressant and thus can increase the risk of STDs brought on by infectious organisms.

Avoid anal sex, particularly without protection.

Urinate after sexual intercourse to help thoroughly clean the urethra and prevent infection. This pertains to both men and women.

Schedule an annual checkup to be screened for STDs that you may not know you have.

If you know that you have a STD, be responsible. Inform your partner and insist that he or she be examined and treated as well. Follow the treatment program that your doctor prescribes as completely as you possibly can, and always use protection if you engage in sex.

    Natural Cures

In order to best treat chlamydia, it is necessary to increase the circulation of blood and oxygen to the impacted areas. Doing so helps to reduce inflammation and increases your body’s ability to fight infection via enhanced immune function. The following natural cures are effective approaches for attaining all of these goals.

Diet: During the initial, acute phase, and during periods of severe pain, a light diet plan consisting primarily of clean organic fruits and vegetables is recommended. In addition, drink plenty of pure, filtered water. Follow this diet for at least 3-5 days. Afterwards, emphasize a diet of fresh, natural foods, with plenty of vegetables and fruit, complex carbohydrates, and free-range, organic meats and chicken. Wild-caught- seafood such as sardines or salmon, are also highly recommended because they are rich with essential fatty acids. Additionally, be sure to reduce your alcohol intake to no more than 1 glass of red wine or beer per day.

Avoid all commercial and processed meals, as well as caffeine, salt, harmful fats, sugars, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, food dyes, milk and dairy products, and wheat products. Also be screened for food allergic reactions, as these can reduce immune performance.

For the complete whole foods eating plan to heal and eliminate all unbalances and disease, connect to the entire article: Whole-foods Diet. Often, a raw eating plan can be very beneficial. For more information, read Raw Food Diet Plan.

Fasting: A three day water fast can help to reduce pain caused by chlamydia while at the same time boosting immune function. Be sure the water you consume is pure and strained. If you are unable to tolerate a water fast, try fasting on fresh squeezed, organic fruit and vegetable juices as a wholesome alternative.

Herbs: The most effective herbal remedy for dealing with chlamydia is goldenseal. Berberine, goldenseal’s active ingredient, has been found to be effective for eliminating chlamydia and other unwanted organisms without further outbreaks even when conventional medicines fail to do so. In addition, goldenseal can boost the effectiveness of drug treatments when they’re necessary.

Additional useful herbs for treating chlamydia include chimaphilla, cranberry extract, Echinacea, and saw palmetto extract berries.

Homeopathy: Pulsatilla as well as podophyllum are helpful homeopathic remedies.

Juicing: The juices of celery, carrots, cranberry, cucumber, grapes, parsley, pomegranate, and watermelon are all recommended. Juices made from green vegetables are also recommended.

Nutritional Supplements: Vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc oxide are effective because of their proven ability to boost normal immune function.

Eat lightly, especially during the initial phase and throughout periods of pain, restricting your food consumption to clean fruits and vegetables for 3-5 days. Afterwards, emphasize a diet of fresh, natural foods, with plenty of vegetables and fruit, complex carbohydrates, free-range, organic meats and poultry, wild-caught fish, and plenty of fresh filtered water.

Avoid all commercial, prepared, and nonorganic food, as well as alcohol, espresso, sugar, sugar substitutes, preservatives, food dyes, milk and milk products, and whole wheat products.

    Get screened for food allergies.

Drink plenty of organic, clean fresh fruit and vegetable juices, such as apple juice, carrot juice, and cranberry juice.

The herb goldenseal is particularly effective for managing chlamydia.

To ensure complete long-term recovery, work with a competent holistic health professional.

  • Chills

    Chills

    Description

Chills are a sudden attack of shivering or the sensation of being cold.

    Symptoms

Shivering, chattering of teeth, and paleness.

    Trigger

Chills are most caused by poor cold tolerance or cold weather in general. Poor cold tolerance means that one gets chilly very easily and has difficulty obtaining and remaining warm. This is often a sign associated with decreased wellness due to numerous conditions, such as thyroid dysfunction, adrenal disorder, poor digestion, and persistent respiratory problems. Chills are also one of the most common indicators of nutrient deficiencies, particularly of the B vitamins. Chills are also frequently associated with a fever, especially one caused by an infection. All of these elements must be screened for and treated in order to produce long-term relief of the chills.

    Organic Cures

Exercise to Reduce or Eliminate Chronic Chills: Those who are easily chilled can have their own circulatory and temperature regulatory mechanisms normalized by a slow progressive exposure to cold during a period of six months. During this period the individual should, on a daily basis, start the day inside a warm bathroom standing only (shifting the feet up and down as if marching at that moment) in cold water for 10-20 seconds. From week to week increase the water amount enough to where, after a 30 days, the individual is standing up towards the mid-calf for any minute or so in chilly water. At this point, they should end the process by sitting within the water (up to the actual waist) with regard to ten seconds. Progressively, the person should achieve a point where they can, after a little months, lie in the bath for several minutes every morning. By this time, the circulatory and heat control mechanisms are going to be trained and hardened and chills will become a thing of the past.

Herbal treatments: Teas of chamomile, boneset, ginger, pennyroyal, or yarrow can all help reduce chill signs and symptoms. Adding cayenne to foods can also assist, because of cayenne’s ability to increase circulation.

Homeopathy: Aconite is recommended for the actual sudden oncoming of chills. Other useful homeopathic remedies are Euphrasia, Nat mur., Arsen alb., Sulfur, and Pulsatilla.

Dietary Supplementation: These nutrients are a good idea: vitamin B complicated (two to three times daily along with meals), vitamin C, niacin, supplement B12, and mixed proteins (two capsules, ten minutes before meals, three times daily). In cases of chills due to low thyroid gland function, thyroid gland glandulars will also be recommended.

    Optional Professional Treatment

If your signs and symptoms persist despite following the above steps, seek the help of a qualified medical expert. The following expert care treatments have all been shown to be useful for treating and relieving the actual symptoms of chills: Acupuncture, Used Kinesiology, Detoxing Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Hypnotherapy, and Naturopathic Medicine. (See Glossary for descriptions of these alternative therapies.)

  • Chemical Harming

    Definition

Chemical poisoning is caused by exposure to chemicals that have harmful effects on the body. For example, chemical poisoning can severely affect the liver.

    Signs and symptoms

Symptoms of chemical substance poisoning can vary greatly, and can range from skin conditions such as rashes and boils, to organ damages such as kidney or liver failure.

    Trigger

Chemical poisoning most often happens in the home due to household chemical substances, or in those who are exposed to chemical substances on the job. Chemical substance poisons might enter the entire body following topical exposure to skin, breathing in toxins from the air, chronic poisoning from steady exposure at work, accidental poisoning in the home (usually young children that swallow prescription drugs or home chemicals), or even by a suicide attempt.

Because of our highly toxic atmosphere, anyone may be at risk for chemical substance poisoning, regardless of whether they reside in a commercial, urban, or perhaps a rural environment. Scientific proof shows that everyone on the planet carries residues associated with dioxin, DDT, and several other chemical substance toxins within the fatty tissue of their physiques. Moreover, concentrations of chemical substance toxins in the body continue to rise, meaning that everybody can benefit from reducing their general toxic chemical substance load.

*In severe, acute cases of chemical poisoning, seek immediate crisis help.

    Organic Cures

Diet plan: Eat naturally grown foods as much as possible. A high fiber diet is particularly helpful for cleansing the body. Recommended foods include brown grain, beans, barley, lentils, oat meal, beets, celery, spinach, garlic clove, onions, almonds, brazil nuts, bananas, lemons, grapes, dates, and basic, organic yogurt. Short, regular fasts will also be recommended to reduce toxicity. (Observe our Cleansing and Detoxing section to learn more.)

Flower Essences: Take Crab Apple with regard to detoxification as well as Star associated with Bethlehem for emotional surprise or stress, if poisoning caused by any sort of accident.

Herbs: Herbs for the regeneration of liver cells are helpful, combined with those that facilitate removal of waste from the body. Specific details rely on the chemicals involved, but the general practice is to combine the tinctures associated with milk thistle, licorice, as well as dandelion leaf in equal parts as well as take 1 teaspoonful of this mixture three times a day. Considerable research and clinical trials has shown how the herb milk thistle is extremely effective in assisting the liver whenever exposed to chemical substance toxins.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the process of applying water, ice, steam and alternating cold and hot temperatures to restore health. Treatments include total body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation, and the application of warm and cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating an array of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a personal-treatment program. Hydrotherapy is particularly affective for removing toxins from the body. Many professionals including naturopathic physicians, physical therapists, and day spas use Hydrotherapy as part of their treatment routines. We suggest trying several at home hydrotherapy remedies but please seek the advice of an alternative healthcare practitioner prior to undergoing these treatments to ensure they are right for you.

*Purified water is essential for any hydrotherapy remedy.

For deadly carbon monoxide poisoning, include five drops of home bleach to a glass of water and as sip gradually. The bleach will help oxygenate your bodies cells, counteracting the effects of the carbon monoxide.

Dietary Supplementation: For emergency circumstances caused by chemical poisoning, an extremely high dose of ascorbic acid and glutathione given intravenously can be very useful. Other helpful nutrients consist of vitamin B complex with choline and inositol, vitamin C combined with bioflavonoids, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, garlic capsules, superoxide dismutase (SOD), raw lean meat extract, protein supplements (free of charge-form amino acids, especially L–cysteine as well as L-methionine), and selenium.

Other Treatments: Saunas may also be effective in helping chemical harming, as can normal Epsom sodium baths and skin cleaning to encourage toxin elimination.

The following process, administered by a physician, can also be helpful: Supplement with essential fatty acids like flaxseed, canola, safflower, or even sunflower essential oil (two to three tablespoons to as much as one/eight cup); company-enzymated B complicated; vitamin C; and lecithin. Eat immediately prior to a light physical exercise session or perhaps a light, dried out sauna. Soon after exercise or sauna, have a cool shower with quality soap. Those who are very sick from the toxins should follow an exercise problem which causes a lot of sweating.

    Alternative Professional Treatment

If your signs and symptoms persist despite following the remedies listed above, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following expert therapies have all been shown to be helpful for treating and relieving the symptoms of chemical substance poisoning: Detoxification Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Homeopathy, Naturopathic Treatments, and Air Therapy (Peroxide Therapy as well as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy). (See Glossary for descriptions of these alternative treatments.)

  • Cellulite

    Definition

Cellulite is not a disease, it is a term for unsightly looking dimples in a variety of parts of the body, particularly the thighs, knees, buttocks, belly, and hands. It occurs more often in women than in men.

    Cause

Cellulite is a result of an increased percentage of fat cells. In order to reverse it, reducing body fat content as well as building up muscle mass is important. Targeted reduction aimed at fat reduction at specific body sites, is very difficult, and frequently is not possible.

Fatty tissue are formed by many proteins which have accumulated within the spaces between the cells due to faulty elimination of waste through the lymphatic system, your bodies filtration system.

    Natural Cures

Aromatherapy: Juniper, rosemary, rose, lemon, or even geranium important oils rubbed into the affected areas can be very helpful.

Bodywork: Self-therapeutic massage to the affected region regularly can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Diet plan: Eat a whole foods diet with less complicated carbohydrates as well as sugars compared to is usually suitable for the average person. Also, drink considerable amounts of pure water and decrease your total fat intake to below 20 percent of your total diet. Also, avoid eating animal fats and processed fats, and do not eat protein at night because unused protein in the body places a greater strain on the lymphatic system.

Blossom Essences: Crab Apple might help release feelings associated with negative body image. Add 2 drops into 4 ounces of pour water 4 times a day and continue before you reclaim your own positive body image.

Herbal treatments: Combine equivalent parts of horse chestnut and gotu kola tinctures and take 1-2 tsp three times each day. Topically apply a salve made with whitened birch essential oil, morning and evening, or even apply an ointment or lotion produced from horse saying twice a day. Aloe vera extract may also be applied topically to the impacted areas.

Juice Therapy: Beet and carrot liquid combined together might help flush out toxins and promote the lymphatic system, helping to reduce cellulite deposits.

Pores and skin Brushing: This staple of naturopathic medicine, which involves using a natural bristle brush to gently scrub your skin in soft circular movements to motivate removal of dead skin, stimulates the lymph system as well as increases blood flow in fundamental organs and tissues, adding to better removal of fat deposits such as cellulite. Brushing should be performed daily for at least 5 minutes and ideally be followed by a shower in which essential oils are utilized.

    Alternative Expert Care

If your symptoms continue despite following these measures, seek the assistance of a competent health professional. These professional treatment therapies have proven to be useful for treating and relieving the symptoms of cellulite: Detoxification Therapy, Energy Medicine (Light Beam Generator), Magnetic Area Therapy, Therapeutic massage (especially Lymphatic Massage), Natural Hormone Alternative Therapy, as well as Naturopathic Medicine. (See Glossary for descriptions of these optional therapies.)

  • Cataracts

    Overview

Cataracts are the number one vision problem in the United States, and are also the leading cause of blindness. Many instances of cataracts develop gradually over time and occur primarily in senior citizens. However, it is possible that cataracts may occur at any age. Due the steady onset of cataract symptoms, cataracts are often mistaken as a natural consequence of aging, which allows symptoms to advance undetected until they are too far developed to reverse the damage they have caused. When cataracts are detected earlier, healing treatments can usually stop their progression.

    Types of Cataracts

There are two main types of cataracts—senile cataracts and inherited cataracts.

Senile cataracts make up the majority of cataract cases, and are characterized by spots on the lens of the eyes appearing in middle to old age. Inherited cataracts, which can occur as early as childhood, are much rarer than senile cataracts and are typically caused by an inherited disorder, such as diabetes or Down’s Syndrome.

    Symptoms of Cataracts

The main symptoms of cataracts are cloudy or opaque spots on the lens of the eye. Initially, they may go undetected, but over time they can trigger partial or even complete cloudiness in the lens. In severe cases, blindness can occur. In fact, 40,000 Americans become blind in one eye each year because of cataracts.

Other indications of cataracts include blurry vision, changes in color perception, darkening of eyesight, night blindness, and temporary improvement in farsightedness.

    Causes of Cataracts

The primary causes of cataracts are free radical damage to the lens of the eye. Culprits include a harmful diet, lack of nutrients (especially anti-oxidants and minerals), heavy metal toxicity, eye injury, obesity, cigarette smoking or regular exposure to second-hand smoke, and exposure to infrared light, radiation, or ultra-violet light.

Cataracts can also be a result of poor blood circulation, sluggish digestive function such as low stomach acid, which can result in the incomplete breakdown of food nutrients, leading to free radical damage.

The use of pharmaceutical drugs can also cause cataracts, as well as other types of vision difficulties. These include antihistamines, diuretics, dental contraceptives, steroids, chlorpromazine, digoxin, ethambutol, precious metal (used to treat arthritis and lupus), haloperidol, hydroxychloroquine sulfate, and tetracycline.

Other causes include chronic physical pressure, especially hard neck or shoulder pain, and chronic, unresolved emotions.

    Natural Cures

Ayurveda: According to Ayurvedic theory, most vision difficulties can be attributed to digestive disorders. Emphasize enhancing digestion and exercise regularly. Specific Ayurvedic herbal treatments are used in combination with the more commonly known amla, licorice, and triphala herbs. A diet rich in natural, whole grains with plentiful quantities of antioxidant-rich- vegetables is strongly encouraged.

Diet: Emphasize a diet of organic, whole foods, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Antioxidant rich vegetables include bell peppers, celery, parsley, spinach, tomatoes, yellow squash, and dark-leafy green vegetables, such as chard, collards and kale. Fruit high in antioxidants include berries, especially the dark rich colored berries, purple and red grapes, apples, cherries, mangos, melons and fresh citrus fruit. Organic egg yolks are also recommended because they’re rich in carotenoids, an important antioxidant. It is best to eat soft, rather than hard-boiled egg yolks to protect the heat sensitive valuable carotenoids. Soft boiled, poached, sunny-side up, or uncooked eggs are best.

Raw eggs may be eaten if they come from a reliable organic source and are washed just before cracking. Salmonella travels on the shell of the eggs and can also enter the egg externally, so washing eggs with hot soapy water reduces exposure.

Avoid all prepared and fried foods, sugar as well as sugar products, refined simple carbohydrates, alcohol, and unhealthy hydrogenated as well as partially hydrogenated oils. Milk and dairy products should be eaten sparingly, and preferably raw and organic only. Avoid conventional and overcooked/barbequed meats. Additionally, get tested for food allergies and avoid all food for which you test positive.

Also be sure to drink plenty of real, filtered drinking water throughout the day to help eliminate accumulated toxins and encourage waste removal. Proper hydration is also essential for maintaining the suppleness of the eyes` lenses. Fresh raw green juices are an important addition to one`s daily food plan. See the recipe area for green juice suggestions.

Eye Exercises: The following eye exercises are useful for preventing and reversing most types of eyesight problems.

Rest your eyes for 5 minutes, every 30 to 60 minutes, relaxing your gaze and staring into space.

Blink your eyes frequently. This decreases eyestrain.

Take regular breaks throughout the day to breathe deeply for a few minutes, coupled with neck and shoulder stretching. This helps to ensure that your eye muscles receive adequate amounts of oxygen.

To further reduce facial tension, yawn in an overstated fashion. Doing so helps to stretch and relax your facial muscles.

Cover your eyes with your hands for 5 minutes and breathe deeply. Do this every few hours as needed.

Spend 20-30 minutes each day rapidly switching your focus from near to far. An easy way to do this is to place your finger 6 to 8 inches from your eyes. Focus on it for a moment, and then focus on an object in the distance. Keep altering your focus from near to far. This is an excellent way to exercise your eye muscles.

Roll your eyes all the way up and down in a full circular movement for 5 minutes, 3-5 times a day.

Pin a sheet of reading material to the wall and read from two feet away (or closer if you need to). Each day, step further away from the walls. With regular practice, you will eventually have the ability to read the same material from across the room. If you are nearsighted, reverse this process, starting as far away from the sheet of paper as you need to be, then slowly shifting closer every day until you are able to read it from only a few inches away.

Herbal treatments: The following herbs can be very helpful for preventing and slowing the progression of cataracts: Bilberry, curcumin, gentian root, grape seed extract, ginkgo biloba, as well as pine bark extract (pycnogenol).

Homeopathy: The following homeopathic treatments can also be useful: Calcarea—for early phase cataracts, Phosphorus—for symptoms that create a veil-like effect over the eyes, Ruta Grav.—for symptoms associated with burning, red-colored eyes, and Silicea—at the first sign of symptoms and until satisfactory relief is achieved.

Juice Treatment: Drink 16oz. of carrot juice mixed with fresh celery, cucumber, parsley, and green spinach in 2 divided dosages (eight ounces per serving) each day.

Lifestyle: Avoid exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke, and if you smoke, stop. When outdoors on sunny days, wear sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays.

Dietary Supplementation: Useful nutrients include vitamin A, vitamin B complex, ascorbic acid, vitamin E, beta-carotene, flavonoids, lutein, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), riboflavin, selenium, taurine, zeaxthanin, and zinc oxide.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): According to TCM theory, the majority of vision difficulties can be attributed to diminished liver function. To restore wholesome liver perform, TCM professionals combine traditional Chinese medicine with nutritional changes as well as traditional Chinese herbs, such as ginkgo biloba and ginseng.

    Alternative Professional Care

The following professional therapies have been shown to be useful for preventing and treating cataracts: Acupressure, Acupuncture, Bodywork (Alexander technique, Feldenkrais, Reflexology, Rolfing, Shiatsu, and Therapeutic Massage), Craniosacral Treatment, Chiropractic Treatments, Detoxification Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Magnetic Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, as well as Osteopathic Treatments. (See References for explanations of these Alternative Therapies).

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

    Definition

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the nerve in the middle of the wrist which produces the feeling of pins and needles, tingling, and general discomfort.

    Symptoms

Weak wrists, prickling feelings in the first three fingertips, thumb, and palm are very typical. Pain, and burning or tingling sensations can also occur across the entire hand and wrist. Carpal tunnel can occur in one or both wrists, and in some cases significantly reduces strength and the ability to hold objects.

    Cause

Carpal tunnel is common in women thirty-five and older. Conditions that can create inflammation or fluid shifts contribute to stress on the wrist and carpal tunnel. These conditions include, pregnancy, reduced thyroid functions, occupations that require forceful or repetitive arm movements, supplement B6 deficiencies (monoamine oxidase inhibitor anti-depressant drugs can create a deficiency in vitamin B6 and should be ignored if possible), nerve disorders, compression of the nerve of the sixth cervical vertebra due to a misalignment of the neck, muscle spasms, osteo-arthritis, and tumors can all cause the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, and therefore should be ruled out or properly tackled before lasting improvement can be achieved. Carpal tunnel syndrome may also be secondary to other wrist conditions, such as sprains.

Carpal tunnel is often a misdiagnosis of thoracic compression syndrome, in which pressure on the lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae results in dysfunction of the tissue associated with the brachial nerves. If this is the case, then treatment should focus on managing thoracic compression first.

Many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome can also be traced to interference in the arm, shoulders, or neck, and are often brought on by vaccination scars.

    Natural Cures

Note: The appropriate treatment of carpal tunnel varies, depending on its trigger. Following treatment, symptoms might improve in a single week or even take many months. Often carpal tunnel can be successfully handled without surgical treatment, although occasionally surgery is essential.

Aromatherapy: Marjoram, lavender, or eucalyptus essential oils applied directly to the tender areas can help reduce symptoms.

Diet: Eat a whole-foods diet and limit your protein intake. Reduce foods that contains yellow dyes, and avoid stress that can deplete the body`s supply of B6 such as the excessive consumption of sugars, caffeine, and processed grains. Meals to focus on include whole grains, seeds, nuts, soybeans, clean salmon, brewer`s yeast, molasses, liver, wheat and wheat germ, and cod.

Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy® to alleviate tension.

Herbs: Anti-inflammatory herbs successfully support the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. An easy approach entails combining equal parts of meadowsweet and willow bark tinctures and taking one tsp. of this blend three times each day. Other useful herbs include aloe vera, butcher`s broom, corn-silk, devil`s claw, cayenne pepper (capsicum), ginkgo, gravel root, marshmallow, skullcap, turmeric (curcumin), wintergreen oil, yarrow, and yucca.

Homeopathy: Aconite, Arsen alb., Ignatia, Nat mur., Chamomilla, and Colchicum are useful naturopathic remedies. Be aware, however, that homeopathic treatment tend to be lengthy however they are usually successful.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, vapor baths, bathhouses, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for dealing with a wide range of problems and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physiotherapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. All of us suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments. Please seek the advice of your alternative health care practitioner before attempting these methods to make sure they are appropriate for you.

*Purified water is important for any hydrotherapy treatment. Treatments for purifying bath water include clear instructions and recommendations.

    Lifestyle: Avoid repetitive wrist movement.

Nutritional Supplementation: Those with carpal tunnel syndrome usually have a large deficiency of vitamin B6, or possess lifestyle factors that hinder B6 metabolic process such as tension, or consuming yellow dyes and tartrazine derivatives. A deficiency of supplement B6, also known as pyridoxine, can also cause a pyridoxine-receptive neuropathy (lack of feeling disorder). Treatment with B6 may relieve the symptoms in many cases, getting rid of the need for surgical treatment. Daily dosages range from 25-300 mg, depending on a person`s biochemistry. Caution: Pyridoxine supplements may produce a nerve disorder (sensory neuropathy) in dosages as low as three hundred mg, if taken daily for long stretches. However, most of the cases associated with vitamin B6 toxicity happen to be reported with dosages of 2-5 grams per day.

Other helpful nutrients to heal and reduce carpal tunnel include, vitamin B complex, the mineral magnesium, essential fatty acids, folate, bromelain, coenzyme q10 supplement, kelp, manganese, protease molecule formula, pycnogenol, and zinc. Thyroid hormone can also be helpful in cases of carpal tunnel related to low thyroid function.

    Alternative Expert Care

If your symptoms continue despite following the remedies listed above, seek the assistance of a qualified health professional. These professional therapies have been shown to be useful for treating and reducing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome: Acupressure, Acupuncture, Applied Kinesiology, Biofeedback Training, Bodywork (especially Feldenkrais, Hellerwork), Chiropractic care, Craniosacral Treatment, Energy Treatments (TENS unit), Guided Imagery, Light Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy (particularly if caused by disturbance fields as well as vaccination scars), Orthomolecular Medicine, Osteopathy, Oxygen Therapy (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy), Prolotherapy, Rolfing (Rolfing is very effective with regard to carpal tunnel syndrome), as well as Qigong. (See Glossary for descriptions of these Alternative Treatments.)

  • Carbuncles

    Description

Carbuncles are a group of interconnecting boils that cause an infection underneath the skin. The actual infectious organism is usually Staphyloccus aureus. Carbuncles are similar to corns, but develop more slowly and are spread over a larger area. Carbuncles occur more frequently in men than women, and are typically seen on the neck, thighs and buttocks.

    Signs and symptoms

They are very painful, inflamed, and red, and may cause fatigue, debilitation, and a fever. Carbuncles are typically filled with pus but are hard to break. Squeezing can trigger scarring.

Carbuncles are very contagious, and should be cultured to identify the infectious organism. Antibiotics are typically used to rid the body of carbuncles. This is especially true with carbuncles in the nasal area, as the infection can easily spread to the brain.

    Cause

Despite the fact that they can happen to very healthy people, carbuncles are often related to diabetes mellitus and other debilitating chronic disease conditions. Carbuncles are more common in the elderly.

    Natural Cures

Diet: Drink plenty of filtered water, and consume a diet with a variety of green leafy vegetables, and whole grains such as buckwheat.

  • Canker Blisters

    Definition

Canker sores are painful ulcers that form on the roof of the mouth, tongue, cheeks, and lips. They can occur singly or in groups, and are more common in women than in men.

    Symptoms

Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, range from mild to severe. Typically, canker sores continue to reappear, with a number of ulcers appearing every time.

Mild symptoms typically associated with canker sores include, burning, pain and discomfort. Sores are usually less than one centimeter in diameter, and can last anywhere from one to two weeks.

Serious canker sores are more than one centimeter in diameter, and last for several weeks or even many months. Long-term canker sores can also leave scar tissue in the mouth.

    Cause

Intestinal flora imbalances attributed to parasites, poor digestive function, food sensitivities, chronic bowel problems, diarrhea, and Crohn`s disease may all cause or exacerbate canker sores. Many naturopathic physicians believe the general cause of canker sores is most likely an allergic reaction to wheat or grains. If canker sores are continual, each of these factors must be screened for and treated before long-term healing can be achieved.

Canker sores may also be attibuted to stress, extreme warmth, physical exertion, severe fatigue, fever, and dental stress. Nutritional deficiencies such as lysine, metal, vitamin B12, and foliate also contribute to canker sores.

    Organic Cures

Diet: Eat a diet that includes a variety of grains, beans, seed products, and nuts. Mono-wheat diets contribute to canker sores, and should be avoided. Avoid foods that may irritate ulcers such as coffee, alcoholic beverages, refined sugars, citrus fruit, spicy foods, mouthwashes, and smoking. In cases of severe canker sores, eliminate stomach-acid inducing foods such as animal products, and eat more fresh alkaline-producing foods such as vegetables and fruits.

Canker blisters are often attributed to common food allergies. These allergies include milk, cheese, wheat, tomato, vinegar, lemon, pineapple, and mustard. See a doctor if you consume any of the foods listed above and are experiencing repeat canker sores. The cause of your canker sores must be determined before long-term recovery can be achieved.

Flower Essences: Rescue Remedy® can help alleviate stress that can contribute to canker sores.

Herbs: To relieve symptoms, use a mouthwash made with sage and lavender. Combine equal parts and gargle as frequently as needed. Consume one teaspoon of a mixture of half Echinacea and half cleavers three times daily to speed healing.

Juice Therapy: Consuming juice made from carrots, celery, and cantaloupe will help reduce symptoms as well as speed healing.

Nutritional Supplementation: The following nutrients are known to speed recovery times and reduce the occurrence of canker sores: Vitamin C, amino acid lysine, vitamin B complex, and zinc lozenges. Take acidophilus bacteria to ensure you have an effective supply of wholesome bacteria in the gastrointestinal system.

Topical Treatment: Using a cotton swap, dab every sore with an 8% solution of zinc chloride (available from your pharmacist). As an alternative, you may also use a paste made of Echinacea tincture and myrrh gum.

    Alternative Expert Care

If your symptoms persist despite following the steps listed above, seek the assistance of a qualified health professional. The following professional therapies have proven to be useful for healing and reducing the symptoms of canker sores: Detoxification Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Guided Imagery, Magnetic Area Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Oxygen Therapy (gargling with peroxide added to water can be very useful) and traditional Chinese Medicine. (See References for descriptions of these optional therapies.)

  • Candidiasis: Candida Yeast Overgrowth

    Overview

Candidiasis refers to unhealthy overgrowth from the yeast, Candida, within the body. Candida albicans is of course-productive yeast that is present in everybody. In healthy people, however, it is kept under control by the immune system and confined to the lower intestine and the pores and skin and, in women, the vagina. To a large degree, this confinement procedure is due to wholesome and important bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, such as acidophilus bacteria and bifidobacteria. When the population of healthy bacteria is disrupted, for example when one takes antibiotics, Candida albicans begins to spread into other areas of the body where it’s allowed to progress unchecked through the intestinal walls to the blood stream. When this happens, Candidiasis begins to mutate into an unhealthy fungus that can infect a system’s tissues as well as organs. Multiplication of Candidiasis into body parts where it does not belong is termed candidiasis.

An estimated 33% of all Americans are affected by candida and the numbers are continually growing; nonetheless, the disease often remains overlooked by most conventional physicians. To make matters worse, its various symptoms can easily be mistaken for other diseases. By contrast, practitioners of natural cures and alternative medicine place great emphasis on helping their patients prevent and recover from candida. Natural cures for candida are far more effective and longer lasting than the antibiotic treatments typically offered by conventional doctors.
It has long been established that Candida albicans, as well as other strains of Candida, are able to spread beyond the GI to the bloodstream, and urine. This was proven in 1969 when researchers had a test subject ingest Candida. Previously, the subject had not been exposed to Candida albicans, nor did he have any detectable illness at the time. Within hours after he had orally consumed the dose of Candida albicans, the test subject came down with a wide range of disease symptoms, including fever and headache. In addition, the scientists who tested him found that colonies of Candida albicans had already spread to his blood and urine, proving that Candida albicans can indeed pass from the gastrointestinal tract to negatively affect other areas of the body. The scientists who conducted this test also warned that the use of antibiotics increased the permeability of the gastrointestinal tract, making it easier to trigger an outbreak of candida in people who use such drugs. Despite their conclusive findings, most conventional physicians disregard the potential severity of candida, and dismiss claims that antibiotics can be a factor in its development.

Most conventional physicians also fail to realize how candida, when it is present with serious immune disorders such as AIDS, can lead to a form of blood poisoning known as septicemia that is caused by Candida spreading quickly throughout the bloodstream, and colonizing in the body’s tissues and organs. In other less drastic cases Candida albicans can cause infection-fighting cells, such as white blood cells, to be destroyed, creating an environment for infections. For these reasons, practitioners of alternative medicine regard candida as a potentially serious health threat and do all they can to ensure it is properly treated.

As Candida spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract and colonizes in other areas of the body, it produces various poisons. These posisons can impair health by reducing the body’s supply of white blood cells, which are needed by the immune system to properly fend off infectious bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens. Candida toxins also inhibit the body’s ability to manufacture antioxidants, including glutathione, an enzyme that is important for liver detoxification and cellular respiration. As a result of these negative effects caused by the unchecked spread of Candida albicans, symptoms of candida can manifest in many different ways, mimicking other disease conditions and negatively impacting many areas of your body.

    The signs of Candida

Among the most common signs of candida are airborne and food allergic reactions, anxiety and depression, chronic fatigue, confusion and/or memory problems, attention difficulties, earache, fungal infections (athlete’s feet, “jock itchiness,” ringworm) which reoccur often, intestinal problems (for example bloating, cramping, constipation, looseness of the bowels, flatulence, as well as heartburn), headaches and migraines, heart palpitations, hives, hyperactivity, irritability and mood swings, increased susceptibility to the effects of alcohol, loss of libido, oral as well as/or vaginal yeast infection, painful premenstrual syndrome (PMS), respiratory problems (bronchial asthma, coughing, hay fever, lung and/or nasal congestion, sinus problems, wheezing), sexual dysfunctions, pore and skin problems (acne, rashes, scaly skin), sleeping problems, and vaginitis.

Mental and Psychological Symptoms: Numerous people who are suffering from candida are afflicted by feelings that they’re “not on their own,” as well as/or even experience other mental or psychological difficulties. All too often, such patients are told by traditional physicians that there is nothing wrong with them, or that they are in need of therapy or antidepressant medications, neither of which will do anything to tackle their candida and antidepressants, can potentially create other serious health problems, including a heightened risk of suicide and other types of violent behavior.

    Determining if you have Candida

Because the signs of candida can closely imitate other illnesses, it is often mistaken for a number of other diseases, and can often be difficult to detect. Possible indications that you have Candida are persistent, lingering symptoms, sugar urges, and a variety of health problems that have not been resolved despite repeated attempts at treatment. If you are experiencing irritating health complaints, the following questionnaire can help you determine if candida might be involved:

Do you use or have you ever utilized birth control pills?

Do you depend or have you relied upon antibiotic treatments to deal with contagious conditions, adolescent or adult acne, or any other long-term antibiotic use?

Do you depend or have you relied upon steroids such as cortisone to treat pain and/or skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or breakouts?

Do you suffer from repeated incidents of athletes foot, “jock itch,” vaginal infections and/or ringworm?

Do headaches, bloating, depressive disorders, fatigue, memory problems, erectile dysfunction or insufficient libido, or muscle aches frequently bother you for reasons you can’t identify?

Do you crave sweets and treats, pastries or cookies, alcoholic beverages, and/or simple carbohydrate such as white breads, bagels or pasta?

Do you experience any of the following: Bad breath, dry mouth, drowsiness, heartburn, mood swings, nasal blockage, post-nasal drip, skin breakouts, and/or a regular need to urinate?

Is your mouth coated with whitish film, possibly a yeast infection?

If you are a female, do you encounter severe signs of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and/or do you experience vaginal discharge or even repeated yeast infections?

The more yes answers you have to the queries above, the more likely it is that you have some level of candida. If that’s the case, we recommend testing for Candida; and, if suitable, follow the Candida Detox, a diet and supplement plan that requires a six-week to six-month commitment, depending on the severity of the condition.

    Causes of Candida

Candida is basically a “modern-lifestyle” condition, meaning that it was practically nonexistent as recently as 50 years ago. In addition to an over-reliance upon antibiotic drugs, which often starts in childhood, and other modern medicines such as birth control pills and artificial hormone replacement therapy, can significantly predispose people to developing candida. Below is an introduction to the primary causes of and additional factors in the development of Candida.

Alcoholic beverages: Alcohol, since it contains both fermented and refined sugars, acts as a food source which unhealthy bacteria such as Candidiasis thrive upon. In addition, alcohol diminishes immune function and may also produce hormonal imbalances, both of which can further increase the risk of yeast.

Alcohol usage can also indicate whether one is already struggling with candida. Individuals suffering from yeast overgrowth usually are more likely to encounter feelings of intoxication and/or even lightheadedness after as little as one glass of moderate alcoholic beverages such as beer or wine. Even in less serious cases, overall, people who currently have candida tend to be more affected by alcoholic beverages consumption, and become sicker when they consume too much, as compared with people without candida. In addition, a condition known as “drunk disease” can result from candida. In this situation, alcohol is found in the blood stream even when no alcoholic beverages have been consumed due to the ability of Candida albicans to turn acetaldehyde into ethanol. This really is precisely the process used by individuals who brew alcohol at home. People who suffer from “drunk disease” will stay chronically drunk until the health of their bloodstream is returned.

Certainly, all of these problems become a lot more severe in cases of alcohol addiction. Moreover, standard symptoms of alcoholism, such as depressive disorders, gastrointestinal problems, headache, sleeplessness, postnasal get, sexual dysfunction, as well as sinusitis, may also be caused by yeast, making a mix of the two problems twice as systematic. Practitioners of alternative medicine also point out that alcoholism may promote additional unhealthy habits, including cigarette smoking and unlawful drug use. Such routines further diminish immune performance and can cause other health issues such as respiratory infections which are generally treated with antibiotics, therefore increasing multiplication and severity of candida. (For more information, see Addictions.)

Antibiotics: Many holistic health specialists consider antibiotics to be the most significant cause of yeast, because of how antibiotic drugs indiscriminately kill off both “good” as well as “bad” germs. When this happens, it makes it much simpler for bad bacteria such as Candida albicans to flourish and eventually spread past the gastrointestinal tract. This is also true when antibiotic treatments ruin beneficial strains of the healthy acidophilus bacteria and Bifidobacteria, which help to manage yeast overgrowth by producing organic antibacterial and antifungal ingredients, as well as biotin, which is a B-complex vitamin.

Without an adequate supply of biotin in the lower intestine, the yeast which normally resides there begins to mutate from a harmless state into the harmful fungal yeast that is a characteristic of candida. From its growing place within the intestines, Candidiasis extends its roots to the intestinal walls and eventually breaks or cracks through, permitting entry to the bloodstream. Frequently its waste elements, partially broken down food particles and other poisons, enter the blood stream along with it, further compounding the symptoms candida can cause. Repeated courses of antibiotic treatments just serve to exacerbate the problem.

Note: In addition to the antibiotics that may be prescribed for treating infectious illness, antibiotics may also be found in acne medications and in commercially produced meats and related animal food products, because commercially-raised chicken and livestock are typically laced with antibiotics, as well as steroids.

Birth Control Pills: Nearly four out of every ten women who use birth control pills develop vaginal candida. In addition, the synthetic hormones each pill contains may gradually weaken the defense mechanisms if used regularly, and in turn, may increase the chance of opportunistic yeast infections and over growth. Also, the synthetic estrogen contained in contraception pills, and in conventional hormone replacement therapy treatments, contributes to an environment where Candida albicans grows fastest.

Dietary Elements: The standard American diet is yet another significant reason for candida. In addition to foods high in simple sugars and refined carbohydrates, foods that contain molds such as breads, parmesan cheese and peanuts, can just about all feed Candidiasis and help it spread. Inorganic, pasteurized and homogenized milk and other milk products can bring about the problem of yeast overgrowth due to both the lactose they contain as well as the tendency towards food allergies dairy processed in this manner invites. Lactose is yet another simple sugar that Candida albicans thrives upon. Non-organic dairy products additionally commonly include traces of antibiotics. Natural dairy products discovered increasingly at conventional supermarkets, or raw dairy products which are available in numerous parts of the country through local independent farmers, offer a more healthy, easier to absorb option, that is generally free of antibiotics.

In general, the primary dietary factors adding to candida are a high sugar diet, and a diet that consists mainly of foods that cause higher acidity in your body. Like most additional harmful microorganisms, Candida albicans can’t live for long in an environment that is rich in oxygen. By contrast, an acidic environment in the body cuts down on oxygen, making it easier for yeasts and other bad bacteria to invade cells, tissue, and internal organs.

Environmental Factors: Home or work environments that contain mold may contribute to yeast and other forms of yeast overgrowth, can encourage the spread of candida.

Additional environmental factors that can contribute to candida include environmental toxins, pesticide sprays, and chemical toxins, all of which can compromise proper immune function, making it easier for candida to spread. Mercury amalgam dental fillings can also encourage a candida condition. If you have this type of fillings inside your mouth, talk to a holistic, natural dentist to have them safely removed as well as replaced.

Other Illnesses: Other illnesses for example AIDS, cancer, and diabetic issues, can significantly increase the risk of candida.

Unwanted organisms: Internal parasites, such as amoebas, cestodes, Giardia lamblia, or nematodes, may all trigger candida, and make treating it much more difficult. For this reason, alternative practitioners will often test for parasites in the event that their patients fail to show improvement after continuing treatment. If parasites are found, they must be eliminated before candida can be reversed. In addition to blood, urine, and fecal testing, holistic physicians often use electronica dermal screening (EDS) to test for parasites. EDS can also be used to determine which treatment is going to be most effective for a particular patient.

Pregnancy: During and after pregnancy, hormonal changes occur in a woman’s entire body such as estrogen imbalances, which can increase the chance of candida occurring. Candida albicans has the capacity to more easily flourish as well as spread in the presence of incorrectly balanced estrogen levels.

Testing for Candida: Traditional physicians typically screen for candida using traditional lab tests such as blood assessments which look for antibodies to Candida albicans. While such tests can sometimes be useful, they can also give fake positive results, since all of us have some degree of Candida albicans in our bodies, and therefore also have antibodies for it. In the event that a large amount of antibodies are found to be present in the blood, nevertheless, that is a powerful indication that candida exists.

Although holistic practitioners may employ traditional lab tests, they don’t rely on them solely. In addition to asking for a patient’s complete medical history and asking questions such as the ones above, other tests used by alternative physicians consist of:

Darkfield Microscopy- Darkfield microscopy, our favorite option for testing for Candida, involves the use of a darkfield microscope. In contrast to traditional microscopes, a darkfield microscope is specially modified to be able to look at live blood cells which are then amplified onto a video screen. This allows physicians trained in this diagnostic technique to detect evidence of disease via disturbances in the walls of the blood cells, and to spot harmful microorganisms, including candida, parasites, heavy metals, nutritional deficiencies, and other types of bacteria and fungi in the bloodstream. Also known as Live Blood Cell Evaluation, it is an excellent view into one’s internal body. Darkfield, along with Electrodermal screening, is the quickest, clearest, easiest method with which to find out if you have candida overgrowth.

Electrodermal Screening: Electrodermal screening (EDS) is a noninvasive diagnostic technique which measures the electrical current of particular points on the hands, face, or feet which correlate to acupuncture meridian points at the beginning or end of energy meridians. The electric signals given off at these points provide information about the health status of the body’s organs and can also be used in order to detect the presence of toxins, energy and hormone imbalances, and harmful microorganisms such as candida. In the hands of a highly skilled EDS practitioner, EDS can often detect candida in addition to many other health conditions, even when other sophisticated testing methods fail to do so, due to the fact that both health and disease are first and foremost the results of balanced or imbalanced energy.

Stool Evaluation- A stool analysis can be helpful in discovering candida, and can also assist to evaluate the health of the individual’s digestive system. Stool analysis can help determine the amount of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as other digestive triggers that can be indicative of candida.

Organic Cures: The conventional medical treatment of candida is restricted to anti-fungal medications, such as nystatin, ketoconazol, and Diflucan. Although these drugs can be handy in severe cases associated with candida that resist additional forms of treatment, natural health practitioners caution against using them as the first choice due to the dangerous unwanted effects they can cause, including reducing immune performance. In addition, the price of the drugs can be very costly. Moreover, nystatin, one of the most well-liked drugs for treating candida, can actually cause candida to mutate into other species of yeast that are resistant to nystatin treatment. Also, nystatin can remain in the intestines after it has been used, continuing to destroy healthy germs, which is one of the causes of candida in the first place. Due to these side-effects along with other shortfalls associated with conventional drug treatment, organic health practitioners prefer to use a thorough treatment strategy that handles all possible causes of yeast while simultaneously strengthening overall immune performance. The primary treatments that make up such an approach are listed below:

Be aware: Although personal-treatment can be useful for less severe instances of yeast, it is recommended that you work with a natural health care specialist who is experienced in treating the disease. Total recovery from candida usually requires a minimum of three months of treatment, and may often require six or more months prior to positive results being achieved. This lengthy recovery is due to the systemic character of the disease, which demands time to be fully tackled.

Candida Cleansing: A program geared specifically towards candida cleansing is strongly suggested. We suggest you read through this section and then read the Candida Cleanse within the Cleanse and Detoxification section for a full understanding of the process. The screening procedures above, coupled with a few of the following treatments done with the Candida Detox, gives you the maximum advantage of cleaning candida out of your system. If the full candida cleanse becomes too much of a dedication at this time, a combination of some of the subsequent therapies can be highly supportive.

Acupuncture: Traditional Chinese medicine alone cannot accomplish the task of clearing candida, though in conjunction with cleansing, acupuncture is highly useful for helping to prevent as well as reverse candida because of its ability to stimulate immune function, and also to improve the wellness of the digestive system, genitals, spleen, and belly, all of which can be compromised through systemic yeast overgrowth. Acupuncture can also help to stabilize cellular metabolism, further improving the body’s ability to resist multiplication of yeast.

Aromatherapy: Tea tree oil can be applied topically in order to heal surface yeast and fungal infections. It can also be watered down in fresh filtered water and used as a gargle to reverse oral thrush.

Ayurveda Medicine: Ayurveda physicians view yeast as a condition that is brought on by ama, or the incomplete digestion of foods, especially carbs. Improving digestive function, boosting immune function, and minimizing tension, which can impact both digestion and immunity, is the focus of Ayurveda candida remedies. To this end, Ayurveda physicians use the organic anti-fungal remedies grapefruit seedling oil or even tannic acids, along with taking a combination of cayenne, ginger, pepper, and also the Ayurveda herbs neem and trikatu 30 minutes before each meal. Start with ¼ tsp. of the herbal treatments and gradually increase the dosage to 8-10 teaspoons every day.

A detoxification and refinement program known as panchakarma may also be helpful, both as a way of eliminating yeast and other toxins, and for improving your body’s all around health. Note: Panchakarma programs, that entail nutritional modification in conjunction with detoxifying measures, should only be carried out under the supervision of a qualified Ayurveda practitioner.
To get rid of foods which support yeast overgrowth, avoid just about all sources of sugar, including all sugar products such as honey, molasses, maple, agave, brown, and all of the refined syrups such as corn syrup. Read food labels, carefully staying away from foods that contain sweeteners of any kind, including individuals listed above, together with dextrose, fructose, fruit juices, or concentrated fruit juice sweeteners, lactose, and sucrose. Eliminate just about all forms of alcoholic beverages, and simple or refined carbohydrates such as breads, pasta, baked goods, and all sorts of foods made from white or refined flour. Abstain from the majority of fruits except for berries, grapefruit and green apples. Avoid eating potatoes including yams and sweet potatoes, and other sweet or starchy vegetables such as parsnips, beets, peas and corn. More diet details can be found in the Yeast Cleanse.

Many people with yeast also suffer from food allergies. Therefore, you should be tested for food allergies as well as sensitivities, and also avoid allergenic foods for a minimum of 3 months, so that your body has the opportunity to recover from eating them. If the foods that you are allergic or sensitive to are healthy food, you can reintroduce them into your diet one at a time after your health has enhanced, and then eat them no more frequently than once every four to seven days. If they still trigger an allergic reaction, however, you need to eliminate them from your diet plan.

Mold-containing foods should be avoided such as parmesan cheese, grapes, and all pasteurized fermented foods. Raw cultured vegetables which have not been pasteurized such as sauerkraut are an excellent option. Read more about the benefits of cultured and fermented foods in the Candida Diet plan section of the Candida Cleanse. Every effort should be made to eliminate pasteurized milk and dairy products, including yogurt, due to the lactose sugars. Small amounts of raw yogurt or kefir tend to be acceptable, and especially good if made from raw goat, rather than cow’s milk. Reduce your intake of commercially harvested meats and chicken because of the antibiotics, hormones, and steroids they contain. Whenever you can, choose natural, free-range meats and poultry instead.

These dietary recommendations should be adopted for 4-6 weeks as you begin your overall candida treatment:

Eliminate: Just about all foods that contain yeast, such as bread, cookies, and desserts; all pasteurized heat treated fermented meals, including vinegar, soy marinade, and pickled foods; all forms of sugars and meals that contain sugar, including desserts and candies, honey, maple syrup, soda, sweetened drinks, and sweetened foods; just about all pasteurized whole milk and dairy products, including yogurt; all foods that contain sugar substitutes, colorings, chemical preservatives, and other chemicals, as well as trans-essential fatty acids and partially hydrogenated natural oils; all processed white flour products; all fruits except grapefruit, berries and green apples; all alcohol items; all dark teas, as well as coffee.

Eat frequently: Select from a wide range of fresh vegetables and salads, focusing on natural, leafy-green vegetables; complex whole grains particularly quinoa, buckwheat and millet. Cook with raw coconut and extra virgin olive oil.

Also include, however less frequently, lean organic meat and chicken, wild caught fish, eggs, almonds, seeds, and legumes.

Eating in this way will not only help you recover from candida, it will also help shift the internal environment into a slightly alkaline, oxygen-enriched state that will make it impossible for candida to thrive.

For additional in-depth food and health supplement guidelines, see the Candida Cleanse.
    Homeopathic Treatments:

Garlic is well known because of its natural antifungal properties. Garlic’s effectiveness in helping to stop yeast overgrowth is due to its main active ingredient, allicin, which is now available in deodorized capsule form, or you can use one clove of fresh garlic. To prevent the unique body odor raw garlic can cause, lightly roast the clove before you decide to eat it. Garlic may be used in a suppository or douche to help treat genital candida.

The Brazilian plant, pau d’arco bark, is also useful for candida. Be sure to use a pau d’arco product that consists of lapachol, however, for it is this active ingredient that gives pau d’arco its antifungal and antiviral properties.

Additional homeopathic remedies with regard to candida include alfalfa, aloe vera, anise, cinnamon, fennel, grapefruit seed extract, lavender, ginger, ginseng, licorice, essential oil of oregano, red clover, rosemary, licorice, tea sapling oil, and thyme.

Hydrotherapy: Constitutional hydrotherapy (contrasting hot and cold water remedies) applied 2-5 times each week can help to improve your immune function, making your body much more resistant to and better able to cope with systemic candidiasis.

Nutritional Supplements: Nutritional supplements can play a very important role in your recovery from candida, due to their ability to improve immune function while also enhancing digestion and aiding in your body’s detoxification process. They are especially useful for people who tend to be severely depressed due to suffering from candida for months or years.

Suggested nutritional supplements with regard to candida include vitamin A, beta carotene, just about all B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, chromium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc. A good probiotic formula containing acidophilus as well as bifidobacteria is essential, as is fructooligosaccharide (FOS), a proper sugar which stimulates the development of good bacteria in the digestive tract. Essential fatty acids, especially those rich in omega-3 oils, as well as adrenal extract are also recommended. The amino acid taurine can help, as can supplementing with hydrochloric acid (HCl), which can considerably improve digestive function and therefore the compression of other nutrients. Colloidal silver is helpful as well.

To further aid digestive function and improve immune performance, you should also supplement with digestive enzymes. Particularly useful in this regard are the nutrients amylase and cellulose, each of which can also help to digest and eliminate unhealthy yeasts, including Candida albicans.

Oxygen Therapy: Air therapy will help quickly produce an oxygen-enriched environment inside of your body in which harmful yeasts, as well as a number of other types of pathogens, cannot be found. A particular type of oxygen treatment -peroxide therapy- is especially useful for treating as well as preventing yeast. According to the late Charles Farr, M.D., Ph.D., who spent most of his expert life researching the recovery benefits of peroxide, it is not just effective in destroying candida and other yeasts, but also many forms of germs, viruses, and parasites. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide improves cellular breathing, overall immune function, and restores tissues.

Note: Hydrogen peroxide therapy should only be administered by a qualified physician. Hydrogen peroxide should not be taken orally, because doing this can cause nausea or vomiting.

Parasite Treatments: To get rid of unwanted organisms, consider a high-dose probiotic remedy using Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacteria, and L. bulgaricus, along with the use of anti-parasite herbs such as artemisia annua, aloe vera, citrus fruit seed extract, garlic, goldenseal, and wormwood. Continue treatment for 8-12 weeks before beginning to treat candida directly.

Alternative Professional Care The following therapies can assist in treating candida: Natural (Holistic) Dental care, Detoxification Therapy, Magnetic Area Therapy, Orthomolecular Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. (See Glossary for more information.)

  • Burns

A burn is damage to the skin tissues caused by overexposure to heat, open flame, chemicals or radiation.

    Symptoms and Types

Burn symptoms vary depending on the severity of the burn. There are three degrees(types) of burns.

First degree burns are the least severe and only affect the top layer of skin(epidermis). The affected skin usually heals within a few days and may even peel away.

Second degree burns are more painful than first degree burns because they damage the skin more deeply. Typically it may take a week or two for the burn to completely heal with little to no permanent skin damage

Third degree burns are very severe and affect not only the skin but also the bones and muscle tissue underneath. Cases of third degree burn are extremely painful and require immediate emergency medical attention. In most instances, a burn specialist will be required to help the victim recover.
    Natural Remedies

Aromatherapy: Lavender, geranium, and camphor essential oils all help speed burn recovery times. To avoid blistering, use rose essential oil.

Ayurveda: Apply fresh Aloe-Vera gel or plain ghee and avocado oil to the affected areas.

Diet: Eat a high-protein diet for second as well as third degree burns to help repair broken tissue. Also increase your intake of fluids and high-zinc oxide foods, for example pumpkin seeds and oysters.

Homeopathy: For first degree burns Calendula, Hypericum, Arnica , Urtica Urens, and Belladonna can be helpful. Arnica (for shock), Cantharis, as well as Belladonna are excellent homeopathic treatments for 2nd degree burns. Although third degree require the immediate attention of a physician, they can also benefit from the use of Urtica urens, and Rhus tox.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the process of alternating between hot and cold temperatures using water, ice and steam to maintain and restore health. Treatments include complete body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective in the treatment of a wide range of conditions and can easily be utilized in the home as part of a self-care program. Numerous naturopathic physicians, physical therapists and day spas use hydrotherapy as part of their treatments. We recommend several in-house hydrotherapy treatments. Please seek the advice of an alternative healthcare practitioner prior to undergoing these types of procedures to make sure they are right for you.

*Purified water is essential for any hydrotherapy treatment.*

Nutritional Supplementation: Apply a Vitamin C salve to the affected area. Vitamin E can also have a strong effect on burns of all types, as can using a 100% solution of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to reduce scarring and stop peeling. To further speed healing times, supplement with free-form proteins, vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C with bioflavonoids, vitamin E, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) as well as zinc.

Topical ointment Treatment: Water and vinegar applied to the affected areas can speed recovery. Silver bandages (colloidal silver applied to bandage) applied to first degree burns is also helpful.

What to do instantly: If you suffer from burns, instantly run cold water over the affected area. This will also help prevent blisters. In cases of second degree burns, mix baking soda, olive oil, zinc ointment, and pure vitamin E and apply to skin to help speed recovery. Take care not to pop blisters or it may take longer for your skin to recover. To get rid of substances melted on skin such as plastic material or tar residue, use ice-cold water.

*Severe burns require instant emergency medical attention.*
